IOSAT Potassium Iodode 65mg tablets are the only UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approved Potassium Idode tablets to take.  

IOSAT Potassium Iodide (as known as KI) should be used on a daily basis to protect a person's sensitive thyroid gland (found in the neck) from the effects of radiation from inhaled or swallowed radioactive iodine. For KI to work, a person must take it before or shortly after exposure to radioactive iodine. When a person takes the right amount of KI at the right time, it can help block the thyroid (a very sensitive part of your body) from absorbing radioactive iodine. This happens because the thyroid has already absorbed the KI, and there is no room to absorb the radioactive iodine. In the event of a radiation emergency, you should have IOSAT Potassium Iodide tablets on-hand to protect yourself, family and friends.

There are 14 Potassium Iodide 65mg tablets in each package of IOSAT 65. This will protect one adult for 7 days or a child for 14 days. IOSAT tablets are double scored for easy dose administration. Anyone remaining in a contaminated area should consider the use of additional IOSAT tablets as directed by Public Health officials.

In the event of a nuclear emergency, the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) advises a daily administration of 130 mg of Potassium Iodide (also known by its scientific designation, KI) for adults and children over 18 years old who weigh more that 68 kilos (150 pounds).

Children aged 3 to 18 years old who weigh less than 68 kilos (150 pounds) should take 65 mg of Potassium Iodide daily. Children aged one month to 3 years should take 32 mg of Potassium Iodide daily; infants less than one month old should take 32 mg of Potassium Iodide daily. If necessary, children who are too young to take solid food or are unable to swallow a tablet should can take IOSAT dissolved in a liquid (such as water or milk) or in a soft food such as mashed vegetables. IOSAT Potassium Iodide tablets have a 10 year shelf life from the day of manufacture - the expiry date is clearly shown on the rear of each pack of IOSAT. The packs should be stored unopened in a dry environment at room temperature.

IOSAT only protects against radioactive iodine which can damage the thyroid and cause thyroid cancer, thyroid nodules, and other thyroid problems. However, since radioactive iodine would probably be the cause of 90% to 95% of all “off-site” injuries in a nuclear plant accident, the protection provided by iOSAT is extremely valuable. (At Chernobyl, for example, thyroid cancer, which is now epidemic in some areas as a result of the accident, was the only health effect seen in areas more than a few miles from the plant).
